TROUBLESHOOTING

A short opera in five movements for two singers and woodwind quintet

Composer, John Carroll

Troubleshooting depicts a phone call between a lonely, socially dysfunctional young adult and an outgoing volunteer social worker who, despite having the same issues, tries to provide counsel.

This short Opera deals with the struggle neurodivergent people often face when we desire connection and closeness but feel thwarted trying to navigate social settings not built to accommodate our diagnosis. The subject matter is informed by the author’s own experience with autism spectrum disorder.

Troubleshooting is dedicated to The Quarry Project consisting of Mark Evans, Areli Mendoza-Pannone and Bobby Frazier. They had Troubleshooting from the very beginning and gave its premiere in November 2022. Troubleshooting is also dedicated to Brett L. Wery, whose support and mentorship proved instrumental in its development. Troubleshooting would not have been possible without its dedicatees. Their creativity, dedication, and expertise breathed life into a project that represents who I am as a person. My gratitude for them is overflowing.
